Winning with Numbers
Winning With Numbers is a highly engaging learning platform taught alongside daily maths lessons to develop number fluency for every child. It identifies over 300 key pieces of number knowledge and organises them into a clear, straight-line progression, much like phonics for maths.
Each week, pupils focus on a single “Win”, introduced through a short Teach Me video that breaks learning into small, manageable goals. Children practice these goals daily through targeted questions, followed by activities that combine their learning. Retrieval practice later in the week helps to consolidate prior knowledge. Lessons are fast-paced and interactive, using mini whiteboards, partner discussion, and features such as the “remind me” tool to reinforce learning and support memory.
This structured and engaging approach builds pupils’ confidence, accuracy, and fluency with numbers. By regularly revisiting prior learning and securing key knowledge, children develop a strong mathematical foundation, complementing learning across all areas of mathematics—bringing to life the message of the theme tune, which the children proudly sing, “If you can do that, then you really are winning with numbers!”
Pupil Voice Feedback
- “I like the videos and the theme tune—they make it fun and help me remember things.”
- “I enjoy going up to the interactive whiteboard when I get the chance.”
- “It helps get my brain ready for learning at the start of the day.”
- “I like using mini whiteboards because I can try things out and change my answers easily.”
- “It’s easier when the learning is in small steps, so I understand it better.”
- “I like that we go back over things again because it helps me remember what I’ve learnt.”
Going For Gold
As part of Winning With Numbers, children take part in a number fluency check called Going for Gold, based on the 300 number facts, known as “Wins”, that form the foundation of the programme. Each check covers five Wins and helps teachers track children’s progress and identify where they are working confidently. For Wins 1–100, children complete the check with an adult, and as they progress, they begin to work more independently. The check focusses on whether children have the ability to respond to questions at each Win correctly and without hesitation, supporting accurate and fluent recall of key number facts.
Independent Learning
Children can also access Winning With Numbers from home using their own personal login, allowing them to continue their learning independently. Their class teacher ensures each child is set to the correct “Win”, where they can revisit the Teach Me video with support from Teacher Ben, watch the goal videos, and complete the goal questions. Children then move through the practice and retrieval activities, mirroring the same structure used in school. They also have the option to use a timer when answering questions, adding an extra level of challenge. The platform allows them to track their own progress, including their trophy wins, winning streaks, win speed, and the total number of Wins they have completed, helping to keep them motivated and engaged.
