Computing

Intent

At St John’s School, we believe every child has the right to a curriculum that champions excellence and supports all pupils in achieving their full potential. We recognise the significant role technology plays not only in delivering the Computing curriculum but in enhancing learning across the whole school and preparing pupils for life in an increasingly digital world.

We believe technology can provide enhanced collaborative learning opportunities, increase pupil engagement, offer easier access to rich and varied content, deepen conceptual understanding of new ideas and support the diverse needs of all learners. At St John’s, we encourage pupils to see themselves as future Software Engineers, Games Designers, Computing Technicians, 3D Animators, Web Developers and Security Analysts.
In addition, children are taught how to stay safe online, both in school and in the wider world.

Implementation

At St John’s, we use Purple Mash to support the teaching of our Computing curriculum. This ensures that all children experience a balanced coverage of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that subject knowledge becomes increasingly specific and in-depth over time, with pupils developing progressively more complex skills as they move through the school.

For example, in Key Stage 1, children are introduced to the concept of algorithms. This foundational understanding supports their progression into Key Stage 2, where they move on to designing, writing and debugging programs and are able to explain the thinking behind their algorithms.

Impact

At St John’s School, the impact of our Computing curriculum is that pupils become confident, capable, and responsible users and creators of technology. Children leave our school equipped with the essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and in an increasingly digital world.

By the time pupils leave St John’s, they:

  • Demonstrate secure, age-appropriate computing skills across a range of devices and applications 💻

  • Think logically, creatively, and critically when solving problems 🧩

  • Use technology to communicate, collaborate, and express ideas effectively 🤝

  • Understand how technology shapes the modern world and the opportunities it offers 🚀

  • Feel inspired to pursue future pathways in technology-related fields 🌟

Our pupils move on as digitally literate, confident learners who are well-prepared to participate safely, responsibly, and successfully in a technology-rich society.
