PERSONAL SOCIAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Intent

At St John’s the principal aim of PSHE is to allow pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life past education. 

In line with the Education Act 2002 and the Academies Act 2010 we cover the three core themes of PSHE, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.  It is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We offer a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded.  As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. The teaching and learning of PSHE using 1decision, iSpace Wellbeing and Votes for Schools (KS2) supports this. 

Implementation

Through our PSHE lessons, our children acquire knowledge, understanding and the skills they need to manage their lives now and in their futures. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society and the global community.  PSHE is implemented throughout the whole school during weekly whole class lessons focusing on different topics each term and is embedded through all lessons and the whole school day with everyone supporting and encouraging the children they interact with, to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning. During the weekly class celebration assemblies and termly whole school value assemblies, the children are reminded of the term’s value(s) and any children who have shown positive behaviour reflecting this value. At the end of each term, a child is chosen from each class to be awarded with the school’s value award and are presented with a bronze, silver or gold values badge (specific badge depends on the number of times they have been awarded this award).

The aims of PSHE and Votes for Schools are to provide children with:

– accurate and relevant knowledge

– opportunities to create personal understanding

– opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities

– a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life

Our PSHE lessons deal with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. They help our pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. Our children also acquire an understanding and experiences of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen. 

The children are encouraged to support the community through spreading words of kindness, our choir singing for the local pensioners and raising money for charity through National fundraising initiatives, such as: Jeans for Genes, Children in Need, MacMillan Coffee Morning (inviting parents, grandparents and friends to come into school) and child-led initiatives which have been chosen due to topics (Water Aid) and children’s choices (National Heart Foundation and sponsorship of an animal through WWF).

Impact

We seek to ensure that the PSHE that we teach, improves the physical and social well-being of pupils.  Through our PSHE education, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, aspirational and confident individuals. Providing a consistent and regular delivery of PSHE lessons, in addition to Votes for Schools in KS2, allows us to fulfil this.

PSHE in the Early Years:

PSHE sits within the areas of personal, social and emotional development and understanding of the world. From an early age, our children learn to develop respectful communication and they are aware of the feelings and wishes of others. From Pre-School age the children participate in regular PSHE theme discussions linked to the SMILE programme. The continuous provision is planned to provide the children with the opportunity to further develop the skills that they have learnt in these sessions and then to use them independently. The youngest learners also participate in upholding our British Values. The children are encouraged to listen, be kind to each other, be a good friend and share with others.

The spiritual development of pupils is shown by their:

  • ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, that inform their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values
  • sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them
  • use of imagination and creativity in their learning and willingness to reflect on their experiences.

The moral development of pupils is shown by their:

  • ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions
  • interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

 The social development of pupils is shown by their:

  • use of a range of social skills in different contexts, for example working and socialising with other pupils, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, including by volunteering cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively
  • acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; they develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

The cultural development of pupils is shown by their:

  • understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others
  • understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures within school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain
  • knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain
  • willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities
  • interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity and the extent to which they understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity, as shown by their tolerance and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socioeconomic groups in the local, national and global communities
